Dental implants are metal, screwlike posts and replaces damaged or missing teeth with artificial teeth that look and function much like real ones.

Today, dental implants have become the most preferable and successful treatment option for restoring the function and aesthetics for missing teeth. They are artificial tooth roots made of titanium material.

Since dental implants, which are generally in the form of titanium screws, their biological compatibility with the jawbone is very high. This harmony occurs by binding the bone cells to the titanium surface. This important biological relationship is called osteointegration.

Can Implants be Applied to Every Patient?

Implants are commonly used for patients suffering from tooth loss over many years. The general health status of the patient should be evaluated prior to carrying out the treatment.

Implant treatment can be applied to any patient at any age whose general health is good, has sufficient bone and has completed bone development.

Patients who are at risk of bleeding, infection due to systemic diseases, who cannot provide adequate care and whose jaw bones are not suitable for treatment should be directed to prosthetic treatments other than implants.

In Which Cases are Implants Recommended in Dental Treatments?

They can be applied…

In edentulous lower-upper jaws,

For patients whose posterior region end without teeth due to loss of molars,

In case of a single tooth loss or any area with tooth deficiency such as large toothless gaps.

Can I have an Implant Immediately After Tooth Extraction?

During tooth extraction, implant applications can be performed immediately, this procedure is called Immediate Implant Surgery. For the process to be successful, the bone and infection status of the extraction area should be carefully examined. If it is not placed immediately, the patient can have an implant after 6-8 weeks of bone healing.

The removal of tooth deficiency in a short time after the extraction will prevent both the preservation of the existing bone and the slippage that may occur especially with female patients. The fact that the roots of the posterior molars are anatomically in contact with the sinus, especially in the upper jaw, accelerates the bone resorption after extraction, leading to the need for bone addition.

For cases where the bone is insufficient, weak or has been lost due to resorption, bone addition is necessary during the surgery to support the weaker section of the jaw and restore it to the required amount for implant treatment. Bone addition is referred to asBone Grafting or Sinus Lifting in dentistry.

Is Implant Treatment a Difficult and Painful Treatment?

No, it isn’t.

The surgical procedure is performed painless with the aid of local anaesthesia. Each patient has a different anatomy and metabolism in terms of difficulty. Implant treatment and planning for each patient may be different. Depending on the bone structure and strength, treatment methods may vary.

Informing the patient in detail and accurately by the physician before the treatment will ensure that this process is carried out comfortably.

What are The Stages of Implant Treatment?

1 - Diagnosis and Treatment Planning

The suitability of the patient’s bone structure and amount is determined clinically and radiologically. A suitable treatment planning is made in accordance with the patient’s wishes and needs following the doctors’ examination and evaluation. .

2 - Implant Surgery

General anaesthesia can be preferred depending on the duration of the procedure. However local anaesthesia is more commonly used due to higher efficiency and lower cost. After all sterile conditions are fulfilled in line with the implant system to be applied, implant spaces are prepared with special drill holes and the implants are placed in them.

3 - Healing Process

The gum healing process; After 7-10 days, the stitches are removed but the process is approximately 3-6 months. The bone tissue heals very slowly compared to the gums. This process can be prolonged in advanced surgical procedures such as bone addition to the jaw.

4 - Prosthesis Construction Phase

There are two types of implant-supported prostheses. Fixed and mobile prostheses.

Fixed prosthetic treatments are designed in the form of crowns and bridges, and completely restore the natural tooth function.

Removable prosthetic treatments differs by that it must be ensured that the palates which can be attached and removed by the patient, have a very good retention with implants.

How Long do Implants Last?

As long as there is a healthy bone tissue and gingiva around the implant, the implant maintains its continuity. Regular checks with your doctor and after the construction phase of the implants is completed, a good oral hygiene and care of the patient will prolong the life of the implant.

Is Implant Treatment Expensive?

In comparison to other treatments, implant treatment is higher in cost due to the materials and treatment methods used. The number of implants and the type of prosthetic treatment applied also have an affect on the total cost. However, increasing the quality of life and providing longer-term solutions for patients’ dental health make implant treatment essential for patients and physicians today. In Turkey, such costs are 60 to 70% less compared to prices in E.U. or U.S.A.

ALL-ON-4 IMPLANTS

Dental implants are teeth-restoration treatment. It includes inserting tiny posts of titanium fused with other friendly metals into your jawbone in a quick surgical procedure. These posts serve as anchors for the overlay dentures, which are a set of artificial teeth for a whole jaw. To support the dentures, the dental implants are inserted into four places that are strategically designed. This method is known as All-on-4 dental implants.

It takes a period of up to three-six months for healing after inserting the implants. Once the implants are fused in with the jawbone, overlay dentures are secured on them using screws.

Let us look at some of the advantages of the All on 4 implants:

1. Fewer Insertions

All on 4 dental implants require minimum insertions. An overlay denture is supported by only four titanium implants. The positions of these implants are strategically designed to withstand all the chewing forces and pressures in the oral cavity. Other options of dental implants for multiple teeth include All-on-6 and All-on-8.

2. Enjoy All Your Favourite Food

After getting All-on-4 dental implants, you can eat all your favourite foods that you could not do without the full set of teeth in your mouth. You must have craved some foods and drinks in the teeth-loss phase, and now you can eat them to your heart’s content. Just remember that the food should not be too hard to chew and clean your teeth after eating.

3. Better Aesthetics

Dental implants look better than temporary dentures or other teeth restoration methods as they have a positive impact on your looks. Dental implants enhance your jawline and make you look younger.

4. Reduces Jawbone Deterioration

The friendly amalgam of titanium and other metals merge with the jawbone over time. This process is known as osseointegration. Due to the presence of these metals, the bone deterioration seen in normal individuals as a side-effect of aging can be reduced.

5. Better Longevity

When cared for properly, All on 4 dental implants last much longer than other methods. There are even cases where dental implants have lasted a lifetime.

6. Easy to Care For

Looking after All-on-4 dental implants is as easy as your natural teeth. A normal oral hygiene routine of brushing twice and flossing once a day would suffice. As they are not your natural teeth, any food particles stuck between the artificial teeth cannot decay them. However, care must be taken as the food particles can decay the tissues of your gums which can lead to a bad situation.

ALL-ON-6 IMPLANTS

While these treatments are similar to one another and generally aim to achieve similar results, there are some important differences. Both procedures are effective solutions for people who are missing a significant number of teeth. Both procedures require the surgical placement of dental implants into the jawbone.

These implants are commonly used for a variety of reasons, including supporting either permanent or removable dentures as well as supporting the jaw’s bone structure following the loss of teeth.

The procedures for both all-on-4 and all-on-6 dental implants take about two to three hours and can be completed in one day. Both procedures also necessitate the use of general anesthesia, which can be helpful if you’re generally nervous about dental procedures.

The implants are named as they are because, in both cases, the entire fixed prosthetic arch is placed on either four or six dental implants.  This eliminates the need for a single implant for each absent tooth. The arch supports all of the teeth, and the arch is affixed to the jawbone in either four or six places. The implants are designed to fuse with the jaw and mimic the natural teeth, in both form and function.

Because all-on-4 and all-on-6 implants require only four or six implants, the necessary amount of healing is reduced, and the dentist can safely install your temporary dentures on the same day as the extraction and implantation procedure. It takes about three to six months for the permanent dentures to be prepared, and during this time, your bones will continue to heal and fuse to the implants.

The most clear difference between all-on-4 and all-on-6 dental implants is the number of implants that are placed in the mouth.

Some dentists believe that the all-on-6 dental procedure provides a stronger, more stable base for the prosthetic dental arch, resulting in a longer-lasting, more comfortable smile. Taking into consideration the mechanics of biting and chewing, additional stability and a more even distribution of pressure may help extend the life of your prosthetic arch.

These additional implants don’t only support your bite. Each dental implant that is placed in your jaw helps reinforce the bone it’s implanted in. Your teeth actually serve an unseen purpose: they help keep the bones in the jaw stable. Without teeth, the jawbones begin to deteriorate. For this reason, sometimes people who wear dentures and have for a long time may appear to have a sunken jaw when they take out their dentures. This can make people look much older than they are.

When people have dental implants, the jawbone is stimulated and maintains its strength, preventing this sunken appearance. The more implants you have, the more strength and stability is provided for your jawbone.

All-on-4 and all-on-6 implants are both great options for many people who have lost several teeth and want to recover their smile. Both procedures are relatively quick and can produce great results. Ask your dentist which procedure is recommended for you, and don’t be afraid to ask for clarification or further explanation. Both are great options for permanent major dental rehabilitation and reconstruction.
